Synopsis & Historical Value

The Game Animals of Southern Africa is a field guide to the big game and many of the smaller mammals of the region. It covers their habits and includes horn and trophy measurements, and it was conceived as a handy companion for visitors to the reserves and national parks of Southern Africa.

This is the revised second edition of 1967, issued by Nelson in Johannesburg after the first edition of 1963. The author wrote from long experience in the field, and he was also a wildlife artist who illustrated his own work.

The book was later revised by Richard Goss and reissued as Maberly's Mammals of Southern Africa. This earlier Nelson edition remains a useful reference for collectors of Africana natural history and wildlife literature, and is offered here as a worn but complete working copy in its original jacket.

A naturalist and wildlife artist, Maberly wrote and illustrated several books on African animals, among them Animals of East Africa, Animals of Rhodesia and The World of Big Game. He also illustrated works by other authors, including T. V. Bulpin and Wolhuter.
