Synopsis & Historical Value
Geological Journeys is a motorist's and traveller's guide to the rocks, mountains and landforms seen along South Africa's major routes, as well as some of the lesser but geologically interesting roads. Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban are covered as well. Route maps with numbered sites, photographs, diagrams, a glossary and a bibliography help the reader connect what is seen from the roadside to the processes that shaped it.
The authors do not stop at the rock itself. They weave in the historical background, personalities and stories attached to the landscape, and they touch on the country's rich palaeontological record. The result is a book that suits both the armchair reader and the traveller with a vehicle and a free weekend.
Published by Struik in 2006, this is a useful companion for Africana collectors with an interest in natural history, travel and the South African landscape.
