Synopsis & Historical Value

Vyfhonderd Jaar Suid-Afrikaanse Geskiedenis is a general history of South Africa in Afrikaans, issued by Academica in 1980 in its third revised and illustrated edition. It was edited by Prof. C.F.J. Muller and written by a team of contributors rather than a single author.

The narrative opens with the Portuguese voyages of discovery in the fifteenth century and carries the country's story forward to the 1970s, closing with the World Court ruling in the South West Africa case. The jacket presents it as an engaging overview of the making of the country, and the volume is supported by illustrations and an index for reference.

As a pre-1994 survey, it records how a generation of Afrikaans-language historians framed the national story. That makes it of interest to students of South African historiography, and it has been cited in scholarly work on the Afrikaner historical narrative. It is a useful reference for collectors of Afrikaner history and Africana.
