Synopsis & Historical Value

Rugby in South Africa was published in Cape Town in 1964 by Johnston & Neville on behalf of the South African Rugby Board. It is a bilingual history of the game in English and Afrikaans, compiled by Herman Steytler and A.C. Parker.

The book is illustrated with black and white photographs of players, early venues such as Newlands, trophies including the Currie Cup, and Springbok tours such as that of 1951/52.

The Board, the governing body of white South African rugby, ran from 1889 to 1992, and 1964 was the year of its 75th anniversary. This copy carries a 1973 presentation inscription from a sports club to a Cape Town school tournament, which adds a modest period association to a useful reference for collectors of South African sporting history.
