Synopsis & Historical Value
Tot siens, koning Arthur (Goodbye, King Arthur) is a youth novel by Annelie Ferreira, published by Tafelberg in Cape Town in 2012. It won the Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature and was the author's first book for young readers.
The story follows Sylvia, a schoolgirl whose future plans have collapsed. After she is expelled from school before matric, she must complete community service at an old-age home, where a nurse insists on calling her Guinevere. When her five-year-old brother falls ill, she has to rely on her own instincts. Her mother's sayings about making your bed and sleeping in it frame the tale.
The novel has also found a place as a set-work text in Afrikaans schools, which makes it a notable title in contemporary Afrikaans youth literature and a useful copy for collectors of prize-winning Afrikaans fiction.
