Synopsis & Historical Value
Published in Pretoria by HAUM-Literêr in 1985, Tietiesbaaikos: 'n werfjoernaal is a humorous collection of stories about life at Tietiesbaai, a seaside spot near Paternoster on the South African West Coast. The author tells them from his caravan, with the local characters and the seafood cooking of the coast at the centre.
It is the first of Pieter Pieterse's food-and-travel books, filled with tales of cooks, campers and anglers alongside practical tips. It can also be read as a record of a way of life that was disappearing. A follow-up, Baai baai Tietiesbaai, appeared in 1987.
A warm, funny piece of Afrikaans West Coast writing, and a pleasing first edition, first printing, for collectors of Afrikaans literature and Africana.
