Synopsis & Historical Value
Published in 1999 by the Lepidopterists' Society of Africa, Lepidoptera of Southern Africa: Host-Plants & Other Associations: A Catalogue brings together the scattered literature on the plants on which southern African butterflies and moths feed, along with other recorded associations.
The catalogue grew out of a database maintained by the author, Douglas Kroon, which included records from his own rearings. It was welcomed on publication as a major contribution towards closing the gap in knowledge of the early stages of southern African Lepidoptera.
It remains a working reference. The Caterpillar Rearing Group still uses it as a basis for identifying known host associations, and it continues to be cited in recent entomological literature on southern African moths. A useful and collectible copy for lepidopterists, naturalists and students of South African natural history.
