Synopsis & Historical Value
Published in Cape Town by C. Struik in 1984, Soogdiere van Suider-Afrika, with the subtitle 'n Boek vir die jong natuurliefhebber (a book for the young nature lover), is an illustrated Afrikaans guide to the mammals of the subcontinent. It is written for readers of roughly eight to thirteen.
The book introduces more than 100 mammal species found south of the Zambezi. It explains their anatomy and behaviour, with illustrations supporting the text throughout.
As a large-format Afrikaans natural history title for children, it is a charming collectible copy for those who gather South African wildlife books, Afrikaans-language publishing and Struik's natural history output of the 1980s.
