Synopsis & Historical Value

Annerkant die longdrop is the Afrikaans debut novel of Anoeschka von Meck. This is the Tafelberg edition, published in Cape Town in 2009. It follows a young woman who is waiting and searching, and whose journey takes her through three versions of herself, as three sisters studying at Stellenbosch.

Her path leads through distant places in South America, India and Africa, and back into her childhood and family past. The story moves through an overdose towards a meeting with a mysterious 'He'. It is a raw, unvarnished novel with a quirky, earthy and unsentimental voice, and a sad, wayward heroine.

The novel has also drawn scholarly attention. Hester Carstens examined its liminality and narrative voice in an article in Stilet, the journal of the Afrikaanse Letterkundevereniging. It is a worthwhile copy for collectors of contemporary Afrikaans and Namibian literature.
