Voices of Africa by W C Scully

Hardcover
Publisher: The Knox Publishing Company, 1943 First Edition.

141pp hardback, grey cloth green-lettered, introduction by Field Marshal J. C. Smuts, issued without front free end-paper, economy measure.

Scully's uncommon final book was published in Durban in 1943. The author died the same year at Umbogintwini. "A miscellany of poems, sketches and stories which had appeared in newspapers over the years, Voices of Africa, was published in 1943, the year of Scully's death." - Adey, et al: Companion to South African English Literature, p. 177. "No one is more competent than he to interpret Africa to the reading public; no one has had a more varied and vivid and intimate knowledge of her ways of living and thinking. He has spent a lifetime in African administration; he has followed the absorbing trail of gold and diamonds; he has studied its native peoples with the curious and deep interest of a lover. He has felt the appeal of its scenery, of its tropical forests and jungles alternating with its grim deserts, its towering mountains, its vast curves of salubrious high table-lands and low malarial basins." - From the Introduction by Field-Marshal J. C. Smuts.
