• Exterior / Boards: The mustard-yellow cloth boards beneath the jacket are clean, with a textured weave and no marks seen. The spine is bright and clean, with red and black lettering. Corners have not been closely examined.
• Interior: The title page and copyright page are clean, with no foxing or markings. The binding appears tight. A small number of brown spots or marks are visible on the front endpaper area and the inside of the jacket flap.
• The Dust Jacket: Present. A glossy colour portrait jacket, generally bright. There is a small white scuff or chip at the lower outer front corner, and the inside of the flap carries a few brown spots and a faint stain. To be protected in a durable archival-type plastic cover.

Synopsis & Historical Value

Published by Tafelberg in Cape Town in 1988, Vegter en hervormer ("Fighter and Reformer") gathers excerpts from the speeches of P. W. Botha, State President of South Africa from 1984 to 1989 and earlier Prime Minister. The passages were selected by the journalist and author J. J. J. Scholtz to show Botha's thinking, aims and goals.

The title reflects Scholtz's view of Botha as a man who combined the hardness of a political fighter with a commitment to reform, in his role as party and government leader. The volume is a primary-source window onto how the National Party leadership presented its reform policy in the final decade of apartheid rule.

Later academic studies of the National Party's reform policy in the 1980s have drawn on the book as a source. It is a useful companion for collectors of Afrikaner political history and the late apartheid era.
