Synopsis & Historical Value
Published in Cape Town by Tafelberg in 1980, Secret Information is an account of the Muldergate (Information Scandal) affair by Les de Villiers, former Deputy Secretary of Information and long-time assistant to Eschel Rhoodie.
The scandal centred on the apartheid government's secret propaganda operations and the misuse of state funds, and it brought down senior figures in the Vorster administration. Written by a man who worked inside the Department of Information, the book offers a participant's perspective on those events.
The book is cited by academic studies of Muldergate and of the apartheid state's propaganda efforts. Scholars also note that it is a self-justifying account and should be read alongside other sources, which makes it a valuable primary perspective for students of the period.
