Synopsis & Historical Value
Published by Jonathan Ball in 2019, The Love Song of André P Brink is the first biography of the South African novelist, whose work was published in more than thirty languages during his lifetime. Leon de Kock draws on Brink's personal journals, kept over some fifty-four years.
The book follows Brink, who wrote in both Afrikaans and English, from his early career to his standing as one of the most prominent literary voices to criticise the apartheid state. His Kennis van die Aand (1973) was the first Afrikaans novel to be banned, and 'N droë wit seisoen (A Dry White Season) brought him international attention.
A review in The Books Page described the biography as scholarly and revealing, and well worth reading. It is a useful companion for collectors of South African literature, Afrikaans letters and writing from the apartheid era.
