Synopsis & Historical Value

'n Droë wit seisoen ("A Dry White Season") is André P. Brink's Afrikaans political novel, set around the Soweto unrest of 1976. Ben du Toit, an ordinary white schoolteacher, begins to investigate the death of a black man in police detention. His inquiries lead him to question the system that shaped him and to rebel against it. He is helped along the way by a Soweto taxi driver and a journalist.

The novel was initially banned in South Africa, though Brink managed to get 3,000 copies out through an underground press. It is now regarded as a landmark of South African literature. A film adaptation followed in 1989.

This is the Human & Rousseau paperback issued in 2005, a good reading and collecting copy of a key work of anti-apartheid fiction in the original Afrikaans. The novel first appeared from Taurus in 1979.
