Synopsis & Historical Value
First published in 1947, The Last Days of Hitler is Hugh Trevor-Roper's account of the final ten days of Hitler's life, from 20 to 29 April 1945, in the Berlin bunker. This is the 1995 Papermac Seventh Edition, a revised edition with a new preface.
Trevor-Roper was sent by British intelligence to investigate Hitler's fate and report on his death. He concluded that Hitler died in Berlin rather than escaping, which settled one of the most persistent questions of the immediate post-war years.
The book became a bestseller and established the author's reputation as a historian of Hitler and the Third Reich. It remains a landmark of twentieth-century narrative history and a useful companion to any collection on the Second World War. This copy is a reading and collecting paperback rather than an early printing.
Author Profile: Hugh Trevor-Roper
Hugh Redwald Trevor-Roper, Baron Dacre of Glanton (1914–2003), was an English historian. His first book, published in 1940, was a biography of Archbishop William Laud.
He returned to Oxford in 1946 as a Student (fellow) of Christ Church and taught history there until 1957. The Last Days of Hitler, drawn from his wartime intelligence investigation, made his name as a Hitler historian.
