Synopsis & Historical Value

Published in New York by Palgrave Macmillan in 2012, The Favored Daughter is the memoir of Fawzia Koofi, written with Nadene Ghouri. It follows her life from childhood in rural Afghanistan, through the years of Taliban rule, to her career in politics.

The book is structured partly as letters to her two young daughters. This gives an intimate, personal register to a story of marriage, motherhood, loss and perseverance, set against a country caught between hope for progress and the weight of its history.

Koofi's account offers an inside view of the making of an Afghan woman leader in the face of repression, and records a significant moment in the recent history of Afghanistan and the struggle for women's rights. It is a collectible copy of a widely read modern political memoir, in first edition.
