Synopsis & Historical Value
Published in Vienna by the Phaidon Press in 1936, with a London issue through George Allen & Unwin, The Art of Ancient Egypt: Architecture, Sculpture, Painting, Applied Art is a large illustrated survey of the artistic achievement of the Nile valley. Its several hundred rotogravure and colour reproductions form the heart of the book.
The plates are drawn from the Phaidon Archives photographic selection and include views of pieces from museum collections, such as a polished basalt Horus falcon of the Saite period now in the Louvre. The book moves across monumental building, statuary, wall painting and the smaller decorative arts.
Phaidon-Verlag had been founded in Vienna in 1923 and was known for handsomely illustrated art books. This volume reflects that tradition of photographic reproduction and makes a useful period reference for collectors of Egyptology and art books.
