Synopsis & Historical Value
Rugbymal: Stories uit die pawiljoene (roughly, rugby madness: stories from the grandstands) was published by Tafelberg in Cape Town in 2011. It is an Afrikaans collection of pieces on rugby, gathered to ask why so many Afrikaans men and women are rugby-mad.
The contributors include former Springboks, rugby journalists and ordinary supporters. Colyn Truter and Piet Croucamp are among the named voices. Together they reflect on what devotion to the game means and what lessons it has taught them. The compiler provides a foreword.
As a window onto the place of rugby in Afrikaans popular culture, the book appeals to collectors of South African sporting literature and to readers who enjoy the game's stories from the stands as much as from the field.
