Synopsis & Historical Value

Politically Incorrect: The Autobiography is the memoir of Peter de Villiers, who coached the Springboks from 2008 to 2011 and was the first coach of colour to hold the position. Written with the rugby journalist Gavin Rich and published by Zebra Press in 2012, it carries a foreword by John Smit.

De Villiers traces his path from Paarl and a long career as a teacher to the national coaching job. He recounts the successes and setbacks of his four years in charge, and the controversies that surrounded him, including the 2011 World Cup captaincy decision and the so-called sex-tape scandal, before turning to his outlook for the future.

A frank and personal account of South African rugby at a pivotal moment, this will appeal to rugby followers and to collectors of South African sporting biography.

Author Profile: Peter de Villiers and Gavin Rich

Peter de Villiers coached the Springboks from 2008 to 2011, becoming the first non-white appointed to the national coaching position. He first built his profile with the South African U19 and U21 sides and led the Emerging Springboks to the 2007 Nations Cup. The Springboks won 30 of their 48 matches under his charge. Before rugby he spent some twenty years as a teacher, and he later took the senior head coach post with Zimbabwe from 2018.

Gavin Rich is a senior sportswriter for SuperSport. His other books include The Springbok Coaches and Mitch: The Real Story, written with John Mitchell.
