Synopsis & Historical Value
On Route in South Africa is a completely revised and updated travel guide that invites the reader to explore the country region by region. Its 37 chapters begin in Cape Town and radiate outwards, covering the towns, villages and cities of South Africa together with their histories.
Detailed regional maps are complemented by route directions within the text, and this third edition carries expanded text with more than 500 new photographs in a contemporary layout.
The guide has long been regarded as a classic of South African travel writing, and earlier editions have a loyal following among both residents and visitors. This copy carries the red sticker announcing 100 000 copies sold, a useful record of the book's popularity. It is a useful reference for travellers, local-history readers and collectors of South African travel literature.
Author Profile: B.P.J. Erasmus
On Route in South Africa is by B.P.J. Erasmus. An Afrikaans reference entry for a writer of that name, Barend Petrus Jacobus Erasmus (1930-2012), credits him with Op Pad in Suid-Afrika, the Afrikaans counterpart of this guide. He spent a large part of his career in the diplomatic service in The Hague and London, and edited various magazines, among them Panorama.
