Synopsis & Historical Value

Published in 1930 by Nasionale Pers, Beperk, of Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Bloemfontein, this Afrikaans volume by Ds. S. F. Feneysey records one hundred years in the life of the Dutch Reformed congregation of Glen Lynden, from 1829 to 1929.

The history follows the congregation through its successive ministers and church buildings. One chapter covers the period from 1859 to 1890 under Ds. G. W. Stegmann, including the building of a new church and parsonage, the financial burden of the undertaking, and the minister's long service to the congregation.

The book is illustrated with photographs and drawings of church buildings, among them Glen Lynden's church of 1874 and the Bedford church of 1895. Parish centenary histories of this kind preserve local detail on congregations, ministers and building projects that rarely appears in wider histories, and they are valued by students of Afrikaner church and heritage and of local genealogy.
