Synopsis & Historical Value

Naval Warfare: An Illustrated History, edited by Richard Humble and published by Orbis in London in 1983, is a large and lavishly illustrated survey of fighting at sea. It follows the story from the oared galleys of the ancient world to the Falklands conflict, covering ships, battles and commanders.

The book is arranged in six era-based parts, each opening with an introduction to the naval technology of its period. Readers move from galleys and sailing ships of the line through the age of steam and shell to the modern aircraft carrier. The endpapers reproduce a view of the bombardment of Gibraltar in 1704, and a foreword is contributed by a former head of the Royal Naval Historical Branch.

A 1983 review in the US Naval Institute Proceedings noted its coverage from ancient oared vessels to the loss of HMS Sheffield. It is a handsome and substantial reference for anyone interested in maritime and military history, presented here in its original dust jacket.
