Synopsis & Historical Value
Kaapse Kontreikos (roughly, Cape Country Fare) is an Afrikaans cookery book of regional recipes that the author regards as typical of the Cape. It moves through comfort food, cold dishes, seafood and nostalgic favourites.
It is not a recipe book in the usual pattern. The author chats about her Cape food in a warm, conversational voice, so the book reads as much like an invitation to the Cape kitchen table as a collection of instructions.
Published in Cape Town by Saayman & Weber, it is a compact volume of the kind that preserves everyday Cape foodways in the language of the people who cooked them. This copy carries the author's signature and a personal inscription, which makes it a more personal example for collectors of Afrikaans cookery and signed Africana.
