Synopsis & Historical Value

Published in 1998, Joost: for love and money is a biography of Joost van der Westhuizen, the Springbok scrum-half, written by Edward Griffiths. It follows his rugby career, including the World Cup win, the Tri-Nations series and his time in the Springbok jersey, and is illustrated with photographs.

Van der Westhuizen made 89 Test appearances for South Africa, scoring 38 tries, and was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2007. This book covers his story up to 1998, at the height of his playing career, and so records the player as he was in the years just after South Africa's return to international rugby.

Griffiths wrote as an insider, having served as chief executive of the South African Rugby Football Union. For collectors of South African sporting history, the book is a useful contemporary record of one of the country's best-known players.
