Synopsis & Historical Value

Published by Basic Books in New York in 1982, Generations of the Holocaust is an edited collection of papers, reports and case histories drawn from the work of the Group for the Psychoanalytic Study of the Effect of the Holocaust on the Second Generation. It examines the psychoanalytic treatment of the children of survivors and the problems of later generations.

The volume also includes a section devoted to the traumas, and the analyses, of the children of Nazi persecutors. The approach is clinical and technical, written by psychoanalysts for practitioners and serious students.

The book is cited as a foundational text in later literature on intergenerational trauma, and was reviewed in psychiatric and psychoanalytic journals including Psychiatric Services, the Psychoanalytic Review and the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association. This copy carries the stamp of a Rand-based clinical psychologist and is dated January 1983, a fitting professional association.
