Synopsis & Historical Value
Gee my 'n mán! (Die beginjare van die Kalahari-gemsbokpark) by Hannes Kloppers is narrative non-fiction about the early years of the Kalahari Gemsbok Park, from the days when rangers still patrolled by camel. It is centred on the park's long-serving warden Joep le Riche, who held the post for 36 years, and on Gert Mouton, the first coloured ranger.
The book weaves together tales of adventure and wild animals, the war against Hendrik Witbooi in German South West Africa, and the searches for the Lost City of the Kalahari. The conflict between the Germans and the Witbooi-led Nama is a largely forgotten chapter that the book helps to preserve.
This is the revised second edition, published by Protea Boekhuis in Pretoria. The work first appeared in 1970 from Afrikaanse Pers, and it remains a source for Kalahari history and conservation lore. A collectible used copy for Africana, Kalahari and Afrikaans nature-history collections.
