Synopsis & Historical Value

For the Record is the autobiography of Gary Teichmann, the Springbok captain who led South Africa through one of its most successful runs in Test rugby. Published by Jonathan Ball in Johannesburg in 2000, it was written with Edward Griffiths.

At the heart of the book is the sequence of 17 successive Test victories achieved by Teichmann's Springboks in 1997 and 1998, equalling a feat of the All Blacks in the 1960s. He also gives his own account of the circumstances of his controversial omission from the Springbok squad for the 1999 Rugby World Cup.

The memoir further covers his years with the Natal Sharks and King's Park, and the defeat against the Lions. It is a useful primary voice on South African rugby at the close of the 1990s, and will appeal to collectors of sporting Africana.
