Synopsis & Historical Value

Dances with Devils: A Journalist's Search for Truth, published by Zebra Press in 2006, gathers the reporting of Jacques Pauw, one of South Africa's best-known investigative journalists. It looks back over roughly two decades of work, taking the reader from South Africa to Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Mozambique.

Pauw's subjects include warlords, drug traffickers and child soldiers, as well as the men behind apartheid-era covert violence. Among those he confronts are Dirk Coetzee, the former commander of the Vlakplaas hit squad, and Sierra Leonean rebel leader Foday Sankoh.

The book is both a record of atrocity and a personal account of what it costs a reporter to pursue the truth in the places where it is most dangerous to find. It is a useful companion to the history of the late apartheid state and of Africa's conflicts in the 1990s.
