Synopsis & Historical Value

Butch is the autobiography of Andrew David "Butch" James, the Springbok fly-half and member of the South African side that won the 2007 Rugby World Cup. It was published in Cape Town in 2011 and written with his long-time friend Warren Snaith Haviside.

The book follows James from his schooling at Maritzburg College through a career repeatedly interrupted by knee injuries, including five ACL reconstructions and three cartilage operations. It also covers the 2007 World Cup triumph, the controversies of his career, his time at Bath and the 2011 World Cup campaign.

James was known for his kicking, his distribution and his fierce defence. This account of his career is told frankly and will appeal to collectors of South African rugby literature and to followers of the Springbok team of the 2000s.
