Synopsis & Historical Value
Baai baai Tietiesbaai, published in Pretoria by HAUM-Literêr in 1987, is a humorous Afrikaans werfjoernaal, or yard journal, set at the seaside spot of Tietiesbaai. It follows the follow-up to the author's earlier Tietiesbaaikos.
Pieter Pieterse captures holiday life on the bay: the caravan holidaymakers, the eccentric local characters, the dogs and the legends of the place. Over it all hangs the threat of developers and bulldozers arriving to change the bay for ever.
The sketches were praised by the critic Anna van Zyl. With its cartoon-illustrated boards, the book is a charming piece of light Afrikaans writing that will appeal to collectors of Pieterse's werfjoernaal series and of Afrikaans humorous regional writing.
