Synopsis & Historical Value
Originally issued during the height of global conflict in 1943 and presented here in a beautifully preserved 1944 Dial Press Ninth Printing, The Forgotten Ally stands as a monumental masterpiece of investigative journalism and passionate historical advocacy. Hailed by the New York Times as the expression of one of the most passionately generous hearts in the writing profession, the text unifies the power and fervor of a latter-day prophet with a rigorous, heavily documented foundation of facts, figures, and historical records.
Pierre van Paassen pulls back the curtain on the hidden geopolitical maneuvers of World War II, exposing the massive, largely uncredited contributions of Jewish volunteers in Mandatory Palestine to the Allied war effort against Rommel in North Africa. Simultaneously, he delivers a searing, fearless indictment of the restrictive British White Paper policies and the global apathy surrounding the unfolding catastrophe of European Jewry. Read in the contemporary era, the text carries a profound, almost haunting irony as the political cycles, territorial frictions, and international stalemates van Paassen describes continue to echo across the modern landscape. This rare wartime printing is widely recognized by modern scholars as a culturally vital foundation stone of modern history, operating as an essential cornerstone volume for serious collectors of World War II history, Zionism, British Mandate diplomacy, and classic mid-century investigative journalism.
Author Profile: Pierre van Paassen
Pierre van Paassen (1895–1968) was a legendary Dutch-born Canadian-American journalist, author, and ordained Unitarian minister who became one of the twentieth century's most formidable foreign correspondents. Beginning his career at Toronto's The Globe and The Atlanta Constitution, his interviews with Jewish leaders sparked a lifelong devotion to tracking Middle Eastern affairs and the plight of European refugees. Operating from Paris as a correspondent for the New York Evening World and the Toronto Star, van Paassen was among the first journalists to courageously expose the rising doctrines of Adolf Hitler. Fluent in German, his uncompromising reports on Nazi atrocities led to his imprisonment by the Gestapo, physical assault, and ultimate expulsion from Germany. His landmark books, including Days of Our Years and The Forgotten Ally, solidified his legacy as a brilliant, fearless advocate for global human rights.
