The appearance of this book will be widely welcomed by collectors of Africana and others directly and indirectly interested in the absorbing history of the 1820 Settlers.

Much of the subject matter has hitherto not been published, as the author's extensive research in SA and England has yielded new and interesting material.

The clear presentation of this material reveals in depth the history of the SEPHTON SETTLERS-The prevailing conditions in London before their departure form an introduction while the sea voyage, not previously sketched so fully, provides the first insight into the party's saga.

The earlier chapters deal with Sephton settlers at Algoa bay, the founding of the village of Salem, the exact location of the land grants of the individuals, the early hardships and the ultimate achievements in adversity of this courageous group.

The narrative is enhanced by nearly fifty illustrations and three maps, all carefully chosen for their suitability and relevance, and they will be of considerable interest to the reader.
