Heinrich Matthee was born in Cape Town in 1964 and grew up in Stellenbosch, where he attended Paul Roos Gymnasium and studied at Stellenbosch University (BA-LLB 1986).
He later obtained a BA Honours in Strategic Studies (UNISA), a Master in International Studies (University of Birmingham, UK) and a Dr. Phil. in political science (Marburg University, Germany 2008). He is a member of the SA Academy for Science and Art.
After working as a prosecutor and magistrate in the Western Cape, he was a researcher on Africa at the Centre for Military Studies, University of Stellenbosch (1997-2001), a researcher and editor of the Emirates Occasional Papers at the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (2001-2005), and a Middle East analyst at Control Risks, London, UK (2005-2009).
He has written articles for Afrikaans and European popular news media as well as academic articles and book chapters on conflicts, energy geopolitics, religion and identity politics. He currently is a Netherlands-based political analyst and strategy advisor to companies active in the Middle East. He is married and has two children.
