Lüderitz is a harbour town in the Karas Region of southern Namibia, lying on one of the least hospitable coasts in Africa. It is a port developed around Robert Harbour and Shark Island. The town is known for its colonial architecture, including some Art Nouveau work, and for wildlife including seals, penguins, flamingos and ostriches. Luderitz is isolate between the inhospital Namib desert and the cold Atlantic ocean, and exists mainly for two reasons: diamonds and fish. The ineresting history of this town is intimately linked to the glory of the german colonial era. Architectural beauty here is unique, of a very high standard, and is emphasized by the desert environment. Strick building restrictions prevented Luderitz from developing into a shanty town during the boom years. Today, however, this rich architectural heritage is in danger of destruction due chiefly to disuse and neglect because of economic recession. The paintings in the book are an attempt to interest the public in Luderitz and the need for preserving this architectural gem. This future of the town is bleak but definitely no beyond recovery. Christine Marais is an artist and art teacher from South Africa. Christine's love for antiques and history is reflected in this book published in 1980. This book is written in English, Afrikaans, and German.
