A Broad introduction to African history from the earliest times, this book begins with the Stone Age, and tells the story of the important African civilizations which develops the valley of the Nile and the great Trading routes of North Africa.

The Chapters that follow show the early history of the peoples South of the Sahara, and their states and cultures build long before the first Europeans came on the scene.

States such as Mali, Songhay and Ghana became renowned for their power and wealth, while others such as Benin contributed to the art and culture of the continent.

The concluding parts deal with the effects of early European contacts with Africa, with the development and consequences of the overseas slave trade, and with the colonial period which followed.

Finally the author discusses the achievements and problems of a new age of African independence.
