The subject matter of this book has proved very popular in the past, as have other books in this series, with their accent on full-colour photography. This particular title features photography by Anthony Bannister (one of South Africa's foremost wildlife photographers) with illuminating captions. The over 80 photographs in full-colour give a visual record of a way of life that is under threat. In an introductory essay, the archaeologist David Lewis-Williams describes the way of life of a people whose culture has all but entirely vanished. The focus of the title is on the lifestyle of the San Bushmen: their art, culture and the survival techniques, which have helped them eke out an existence in an unforgiving environment. The introduction gives both a brief history of these resilient people and an insight into the way they live.
