The history of the South African Sugar Industry is in many ways a history of Natal. There is an element of romance in it and across the pages of both stride men who have brought both colour and dignity to the Province and to the Industry. Right up to the present time, many of the men who have served the Sugar Industry well have also played a notable part in the affairs of Natal and South Africa.

In these pages will be found much of the colour am. romance which invested Natal in its early days, when the infant Sugar Industry was struggling against many difficulties for its existence. There has been a deliberate attempt to break away from the purely factual in recounting this story, for facts alone can be dry and statistics can be dusty. And while the events set out in this history are factual, they have been recounted in a way which will, it is hoped, provoke interest and lead the reader to regard this as a story of achievement as much as a chronicle of events.

A vast amount of research was done before this book could be written. In this some of the old tales, which have been handed down by word of mouth from the earliest days of the Industry, have been discounted; some of the most colourful episodes have emerged as fiction in the light of later research. This is inevitable, because history is fact and this volume has been condensed from the information accumulated during the long time in which the author concentrated on research. The South African Sugar Association is proud of its heritage and is glad to pay tribute, through this history, to the men who established and developed the Sugar Industry. They built better than they knew, and their work today stands on its own merits.
