This work was written in 1923 on the eve of Rhodesia’s assumption of Responsible Government after some 33 years of Charter Company administration. It covers an important period of transition in the country’s political life, and its republication 48 years later occurs at a time of equally grave transition for the peoples of Rhodesia.
In her Introduction the author wrote: “The true story of Rhodesia is contained in the records of her settlers, their struggles, their hopes, their failures and their successes; and to get the atmosphere of the country one must know what her people are thinking about, talking about, what are their domestic, social and economic problems.” T
his comment is as valid and relevant today as it was then. It has been our pleasure over the past three years to reprint the writings of many of those whose labours and spirit won for us the land whose fruits we now enjoy. The Real Rhodesia performed a valuable service in interpreting to outsiders the peculiar characteristics of Rhodesia and Rhodesians, and in crystallizing and giving expression to their political aspirations at that time.
Mrs. Ethel Tawse Jollie, O.B.E. was one of the more talented of the female figures of the post-pioneering period. As a member of the first Southern Rhodesian parliament (1923-1927) and the first woman to sit in an Empire Parliament, she was an arresting and outstanding personality whose fluent and impressive contributions to parliamentary debates were marked by careful study and a broad attitude of mind. She was elected to the former Legislative Council in 1920 as representative for the Eastern Districts.
