Synopsis & Historical Value
The Nationalists in Opposition 1934-1948 is a political history of the National Party during the years between the 1934 Fusion split and the general election of 1948. It follows the party from a diminished rump in opposition to the governing party of South Africa.
Stultz argues that the 1948 result owed more to disillusionment with the policies of conciliation than to the appeal of apartheid. The book is a revision of the author's doctoral thesis on the electoral revival of the National Party, and later scholars have cited it as a standard work on the period.
This Human & Rousseau edition was published in South Africa in the mid-1970s, shortly after the American edition issued by the University of California Press under a different title. It remains a useful reference for collectors of South African political history and Afrikaner nationalism.
