Nell Gwyn and Charles II used to stay at the Royal Hunting Lodge in the deer park of Bestwood. Nell Gwyn's son by Charles II was the first Duke of St Albans, of the Beauclerk family, and Charles gave him the then much bigger area of the Bestwood Hunting Lodge and surrounding area as his estate. There is a legend that Nell rode round as big an area as she could to define the area of the estate, when Charles challenged her to do this before breakfast, knowing she wasn't good at rising early! This book allows you to follow some of the history of the park up to today when its a much-loved country park for local people.
