Author Profile: Albie Sachs

Justice Albert "Albie" Louis Sachs is one of the most revered human rights activists, legal scholars, and jurists in South African history. Born in Johannesburg in 1935, he began defending anti-apartheid activists as a young advocate at the age of 21, resulting in multiple terms of imprisonment, solitary confinement, and eventual exile. While teaching law in Mozambique in 1988, he survived a state-sponsored assassination attempt that cost him his right arm and the sight in one eye.

Undeterred, he worked closely with Oliver Tambo to draft the ANC’s transitional Code of Conduct and the democratic Constitution. In 1994, President Nelson Mandela appointed Sachs as a founding justice to the newly created Constitutional Court of South Africa, a bench on which he served with immense distinction until his retirement in 2004. His life stands as a testament to the triumph of the human spirit over systematic oppression.
