Synopsis & Historical Value
Published in London by Hutchinson in 1984, The Faith is a novel with a medical setting, co-written by the heart surgeon Christiaan Barnard and the South African novelist and journalist Siegfried Stander.
The story draws on the world of medicine: a surgeon collapses, a hospital isolation ward is closed off, and a mysterious haemorrhagic fever spreads. Meanwhile a doctor looks into the finances of an aid organisation.
Barnard and Stander collaborated on several books, among them The Unwanted (1974). This copy combines the authorship of one of South Africa's best-known surgeons with a clean original dust jacket.
Author Profile: Christiaan Barnard & Siegfried Stander
Christiaan Barnard (1922-2001) was born in Beaufort West and became one of the most famous surgeons of the twentieth century. On 3 December 1967 he performed the world's first human heart transplant, and he continued as a heart surgeon until arthritis forced him to stop operating in 1987.
Siegfried Stander (born 1935 in Rietbron) was a South African journalist and author of crime novels and political thrillers. His novels This Desert Place (1961) and The Horse both won the CNA Award. He collaborated with Barnard on several books, including The Unwanted.
