Synopsis & Historical Value

The Confederate Navy: The Ships, Men and Organization, 1861-65 is a multi-author illustrated survey of the Confederate States Navy during the American Civil War, edited by the maritime historian William N. Still, Jr. It covers the ships, officers, seamen and marines, shore facilities, shipbuilding, strategy and tactics, and operations, including those on the western rivers.

The volume was conceived as a companion to Donald L. Canney's Lincoln's Navy and is often paired by readers with Raimondo Luraghi's A History of the Confederate Navy. Contributors include Luraghi, Robert Holcombe, Maurice Melton, Royce Shingleton, Harold D. Langley, Norman C. Delaney, David M. Sullivan and Robert M. Browning Jr.

This is the Conway Maritime Press first British publication of 1997, with a bibliography and an introduction by the US Navy's Director of Naval History. It is a useful reference for naval historians and Civil War collectors, and a handsome large-format volume in its illustrated jacket.

Author Profile: William N. Still, Jr.
