This is a comprehensive history of the Transvaal up to the Convention of 1884. The preliminary chapters sketch briefly the events at the Cape leading up to the Great Trek and the Trek itself. The books becomes detailed from the moment the Trekkers cross the Vaal River. All the relevant facts such as the various battles for leadership, the discovery of gold, the Delagoa Bay Railway, the annexation of the Transvaal, the administration under Shepstone, the first Boer War and the two conventions are fully described. The author was a lover of the truth and had no hesitation in severely criticising Boer or Briton where he felt such criticism was warranted.
