Synopsis & Historical Value

Published by the FAK in Pretoria in 2015, Taalpioniers is an Afrikaans-language history of the people and institutions who pioneered work on the Afrikaans language. Danie Langner and Dawie du Plessis trace their contributions across many fields of public and cultural life.

The chapters range across commerce, religion, literature, music, education, the press, law, language monuments and publishing. The book also touches on modern language technology and looks ahead to the future of Afrikaans in South Africa and Namibia.

The work has been cited in academic writing on Afrikaans standardisation and on the 1975 torch run. It is a useful reference for anyone interested in Afrikaans cultural heritage and the story of how the language was built and promoted.
