Synopsis & Historical Value

Submarines by Antony Preston, published in London by Bison Books in 1982, is a large, lavishly illustrated history of the underwater warship. It follows the development and design of submarines and their use by various navies, with a wealth of photographs and technical cutaway drawings.

The book also looks at the submarine's combat record in the two world wars, when the type moved from experimental curiosity to a decisive naval weapon. The generous format lets the photographs and line drawings carry much of the story.

A clean, handsome copy in its original illustrated dust jacket, this is a useful reference and a good addition to a naval or militaria library.
