Synopsis & Historical Value
Stories op Rym, subtitled Keur van vroeë Afrikaanse verhalende verse, is an anthology of early Afrikaans narrative poetry, published by LAPA Uitgewers in Pretoria in 2000 and compiled by Pieter W. Grobbelaar. The selection gathers early favourites among Afrikaans verse that tells a story, and it includes a full-page portrait of C.P. Hoogenhout.
The volume is illustrated in colour throughout by Annette Stork, whose pictures accompany the verse and give the collection the feel of a lavishly presented family keepsake as well as a literary anthology.
Grobbelaar was closely associated with Afrikaans folk culture and folklore, and this anthology reflects that interest in the older storytelling tradition. A companion volume, Die tweede gerf, followed in 2003, drawing mainly on older poets. This ex-library copy will suit readers and collectors of Afrikaans poetry and heritage literature.
