Synopsis & Historical Value

Stigting: Die Afrikanervolkswag collects the main speeches delivered at the founding of the Afrikanervolkswag on 4 and 5 May 1984, and was published in Pretoria by the organisation itself. It preserves the voice of the movement at the moment of its creation.

The Volkswag was established as a platform to unite Afrikaners around a shared cultural identity. Its roots lay in resistance to the National Party's reform measures of the early 1980s. Reported attendance at the founding meeting exceeded 10,000 people at the Skilpadsaal in Pretoria.

The movement drew sharp attention at the time, with Parliament condemning it and the Minister of Education disputing its claim to be a purely cultural body. A primary document of this kind is useful to collectors of Afrikaner political and cultural history and to researchers of the Afrikaner nationalism of the 1980s.
