Synopsis & Historical Value

Raaisels op Keurboslaan is the fifth book in the Keurboslaan series, Afrikaans school stories set in a boys' boarding school. It was written by Theunis Krogh and published by J. L. van Schaik in Pretoria in 1947.

The story follows Fanie Niewenhuys and his friends, a notorious and unruly gang of boys at the Keurboslaan boarding school, and a scheme involving the headmaster's horse.

The series was published by Van Schaik between 1941 and 1971 and was written for young Afrikaans readers. It has since attracted scholarly attention for what it reveals about Afrikaner nationalism and the way race was depicted in popular youth fiction of the period. It is a collectible piece of Afrikaans children's literature and of mid-twentieth-century Afrikaner popular culture.

Author Profile: Theunis Krogh (Stella Blakemore)

Theunis Krogh was the pseudonym of Stella Blakemore (1906-1991), a South African woman writer of Afrikaans youth novels, born near Lindley in the Orange River Colony.

Under her own name she wrote the Maasdorp girls' series, which proved even more popular than the Keurboslaan books. Other titles published as Theunis Krogh include Jong Doktor Serfontein and Die Hoof van Keurboslaan.
