Synopsis & Historical Value
Politieke Briewe 1911-1912 Deel 2 is the second volume of a scholarly series of political correspondence from the early years of the Union of South Africa. It was edited by Dr. A.H. Marais and published in 1973 by Tafelberg-Uitgewers in Cape Town and Johannesburg, as part of the Publikasiereeks van INEG, the document-publication series of the Instituut vir Eietydse Geskiedenis (Institute for Contemporary History).
The volume is cited by historians for the letters of Jan Smuts, including a letter of 20 January 1911 to M. T. Steyn, and for material relating to Smuts's introduction of the South Africa Defence Bill in February 1912.
As a published primary-source collection in Afrikaans, it is a useful reference for students of the Union period and of Afrikaner political history, and a worthwhile addition to a collection of document publications from this series.
